Glass objects – free standing and wall hung
Inspiration for my glass work has come mostly from walking in Purbeck and from observing life under the sea – I used to be a diver. I’ve also received some challenging commissions that challenged me to think how to make, for example, a glass lobster, or a flying Kingfisher!
Recently I have started to explore colour combinations in abstract patterns on vases. Since my son gave me his kiln in 2013, just as I retired, I have been learning ever more about working with glass. For example, looking into what give naturally clear glass colour (minerals, mostly metal oxides) led me to use copper and cobalt oxides that produce very different blues and leave bubbles that catch the light and bring a vibrancy to the work.
My glass fish are made by cutting glass and fusing them in the kiln. I then put them in the kiln again, but this time on moulds to give them a 3D shape. I also take advantage of chemical reactions between the colouring agents in some glass that give a third colour where the glasses meet, adding complexity and interest. I’m learning how to make stained glass and adapt it to my style of work. Whether or not I succeed in making objects that I am happy to exhibit remains to be seen.
