Craft Competition

Enter your work into our craft competitions.   We welcome entries from everyone, whether you are a beginner or have more experience.

You may enter up to three items in any section, and you may enter up to five items across all the Craft sections.

Details of the craft sections are shown below and cover all types of crafts.

You may enter up to a maximum of five entries across all sections, with a maximum of three entries in any specific section.    

Trophies and certificates are awarded for each section, at the discretion of the judge. 

We prefer you to enter your work online. You will be asked to enter details of your entries at checkout.

If you are unable to complete an online form, paper forms are available from the Entries Secretary entries@dorsetartsandcrafts.org

If your entry is especially large, difficult to handle, or has specific display requirements, please contact the Entries Secretary in advance of handing-in day to discuss how the work will be presented.

Presentation requirements for crafts

  • Finish and overall presentation will be taken into account by the judge.
  • If your entry is framed for hanging, it must have secure eyelets or “D” rings and a substantial taut cord about 1/3 from the top of the frame.
  • You may attach to  your work a label no larger than 10.5 x 15cm (4″ x 6″) with details of materials used and sources of inspiration, but not including your name.   This information will be taken into account by the judge.
  • Labels will be supplied by us, using the information from your entry form.   Please attach with long thread to your work.
  • Labels for quilts must be attached about half way down the right of the quilt.
  • Copyright must be acknowledged where applicable.

Anyone resident in Dorset can enter the judged competitions, whether they are a DACA  member or not.  

Anyone resident outside Dorset must be an Associate Member to enter work.    

Entries must be your own unaided work.  

Entries must not have been entered into a previous judged DACA competition.  

Presentation and finish, including any information provided, will be taken into account by the judge.  

Copyright must be acknowledged where applicable.  

Items entered into the judged competition will not be for sale.

DACA welcomes entries from those with any form of disability or additional need.

If the nature of your disability or additional need influences your ability to create your work and you would like the judge to take this into account, please tell us when submitting your entry details.

We encourage you to provide relevant details with your entry to assist the judges when it is handed in.  This information will not be displayed to the public.

Here’s everything you need to know once you have submitted your entry, including delivering your work, how it is judged and displayed, and collection arrangements.  

Labelling your work  

Once you have submitted your entry form, whether online or by post, you will receive, by post,  

  • labels for your work  
  • a printed copy of your entry form (needed for hand-in and collection)  
  • flyers for your use to publicise Showcase  

It is your responsibility to check that the information on the labels and entry form is correct, including  the price for work for sale. The labels for judged Craft and Fine Art entries do not include your name; this will be added  after the work has been judged. If any information is incorrect, please contact the Entries Secretary entries@dorsetandcrafts.org immediately.  

Attach the labels securely to your work, in accordance with the guidance for your competition.   Please ensure that you attach the correct label to each entry.   

If you are entering a multiple batch of items (e.g. a multi pack of cards), you will receive a single label for the pack.   We recommend that these are packaged as a single pack in cellophane with the label attached to the pack.    

Handing in your work  

On your chosen handing-in day / time, bring your work to Purbeck School, Worgret Road, Wareham,  BH20 4PF. Please remember to bring  

  • every item you are entering, labelled correctly  
  • the printed copy of your entry form  

Your entries will be checked against your entry form, and any discrepancies will be resolved. The  entry form, signed by a member of the DACA team to confirm receipt of your work, will be returned to  you. This will be needed when you collect your work.  

If someone is delivering your work on your behalf, please ensure that they have the printed copy of  your entry form.  

We are unable to store wrappings, boxes or other materials.  

If you have difficulty delivering your exhibits, please contact the Entries Secretary for guidance.

Craft Sections

The craft sections are listed below.   Choose your section to find out more.

Includes calligraphy with or without decoration, illumination, designs for painted and engraved letters

Includes garments, accessories and other items in any fibre, using any technique.  Dolls’ clothes may be displayed on a doll if you with; the doll will not be judged.

Includes dressmaking, tailoring, millinery, baby and children’s wear.

Excludes embellishments for commercial garments – enter in the Textiles section.

Includes pictorial (2D), objects (3D) nuno felt, needle felt, wearable items.

Excludes work made from commercially made felt – enter in the Other Crafts section.

Includes traditional leaded stained glass, “Tiffany-style” stained glass, kilnformed glass, painted and fired glass, engraved glass, simulated “stained glass”, individual lampwork items such as beads.

Excludes jewellery made from lampwork – enter in the Jewellery section.

Jewellery made using any technique and any material(s).   Includes any form of jewellery made using beadwork (please state if the beads were made by the exhibitor).

Excludes beadwork that is not jewellery – please enter in the Other Crafts section.

Includes baby and children’s wear, adult garments, any other knitted items, knitted lace.

Dolls clothes’ may be displayed on a doll if you wish; the doll will not be judged.

Attach the maker’s label of the yarn, or state the ply of the wool used.

State whether a machine has been used.

Includes all bobbin laces, tatting, needle lace and any other lace-making techniques.

Please state which techniques have been used.

Includes work with resins, 3D printing, laser cutting, use of acrylic and perspex, friendly plastic and digital art.

Please state which software has been used where relevant.

Includes hand embroidery, machine embroidery, cross stitch, counted thread work, canvas work, plastic canvas work.

Embroidered pictures must have a secure method of hanging.

Includes patchwork in any form, including applique and English Paper Pieced.

Includes hand, machine or long-arm quilting.

Includes wall hangings, bags, 3D items and clothing.

For all wall hung items the size in centimetres….needs rewording!

Quilts and wall hangings must have a 10cm minimum (depth??)sleeve attached on the reverse for hanging, unless the piece includes an integral hanging system.  

Includes porcelain, stoneware (fired above 1200°), earthenware (fired below 1200°), cast ware, raku ware.

Work must contain at least 95% recycled material.

Includes skein of handspun yarn (skein to be at least 25 metres) and items made from handspun yarn.

For items made from handspun yarn, include a sample of the original fibre and state the spinning technique used.

Includes batik / shibori / resist / tie and dye, painting / printing on silk, silk-screen printing, block printing, painting / printing with embroidery, encaustic printing, garment embellishments, hand-dyed yarns and articles made from these, silk flowers, cord knotting and macramé.

Excludes soft furnishings using predominantly patchwork, appliqué or quilting techniques – enter in the Patchwork & Quilting section.

Includes Dorset buttons (individual buttons, sets of buttons or buttons used in a creative way)), bonnets, smocks and any item using Dorset featherstitch.

Includes corn dollies and straw work.

Includes handwoven cloth and items incorporating handwoven fabric as a major part of the item, woven braid (min 30cm length) and items incorporating this, handwoven rugs, wall hangings and tapestries.

Please attach a label stating the type of yanr used, the weave structure and the sett of cloth (epi/epcm).

Includes any article of wood, using any woodworking technique, using seasoned or unseasoned / green wood.

We welcome all types of craft work, whether or not there is a specific section listed.

If your craft is not covered by another section, then this is the section for you.

Please attach a label to your work giving information about the craft techniques involved and materials used.
